PRAKTISK ENGELSK - avsluttet 2009

Course contents
In this course we will work with the acquisition of practical grammar and vocabulary. This does not only involve learning what is grammatically correct (in Standard English) and what a word or expression "means", in the strict sense of the word; it also involves developing knowledge about how our choice of words, expressions and constructions is determined by extra-linguistic factors such as style, text type and social/communicative context. We will focus on differences between English and Norwegian which are known to present problems to Norwegians in the acquisition of English.

This course is part of a package offered to students living outside of Tromsoe, to enable them to study English. The relevant students will come to Tromsoe twice in the course of the semester, and in those periods we wish to give them as much input as possible. There will therefore be two intensive teaching weeks, where students are given 10 hours of teaching in two days, and where all students taking the course (regular and distance students) will attend all the relevant classes.
Intensive teaching weeks (10 hours of teaching): weeks 6 and 10 (Wednesday and Thursday).

Objective of the course
Through this course, students will train their practical language skills. In addition, they will become aware of basic differences between English and Norwegian and in particular of those differences that cause problems in language learning.
